Gerard Gallant Named Head Coach of Tucson Rock Lobsters U6 and U4 Teams
TUCSON, AZ — In another blockbuster move for youth hockey that no one saw coming, the Tucson Rock Lobsters have announced that former NHL head coach Gerard Gallant will take the reins of their prestigious U6 and U4 programs.
Gallant, who has guided NHL teams deep into the Stanley Cup Playoffs, now faces a new challenge: teaching toddlers how to stand up on skates without resembling Bambi on ice.
“This is about structure,” Gallant told reporters after being handed a whistle decorated with Paw Patrol stickers. “I know half these kids can’t read yet, but that doesn’t mean they can’t execute a forecheck. We’re gonna run a system. Maybe nap time interferes, maybe juice boxes interfere — doesn’t matter. We’re building a culture.”
Parents applauded the hire, though many admitted they weren’t sure what to expect. “I just wanted my four-year-old to burn off some energy before dinner,” said one Rock Lobsters dad. “Now he’s coming home talking about ‘defensive accountability.’ He doesn’t even know how to spell his own name yet.”
Gallant has already instituted major changes. The U6 squad now begins practice with a mandatory handshake line, while the U4 team’s warm-up includes learning how to properly celebrate goals without dropping their sticks.
When asked about his coaching philosophy for such young players, Gallant was firm. “It’s simple. Compete level. Doesn’t matter if you’re 30 or you just learned how to use the bathroom on your own. You play hard, or you sit. Next question.”
